2022 WHIPIC Online Lecture and Webinar Series
Since 2020, WHIPIC Lecture and Webinar Series programs have been conducted every year with worldly renowned scholars of heritage interpretation. In 2022 as well, the program ended successfully. In commemoration of the 50th year of UNESCO World Heritage Convention, 5 online lecture and webinar sessions were conducted with the theme, ‘Bridging the Gap: 50 Years of the World Heritage Convention.’ This year, the program presented contributions of the Convention in the past 50 years and our future missions. Recordings of every lecture are available via YouTube and Facebook.
A Practical Education Course on World Heritage Interpretation and Presentation
2022 UNESCO Practical Education Course on World Heritage Interpretation and Presentation is a capacity-building program for heritage managers. This program was designed to raise awareness of world heritages, their values, related policies, current issues, etc.
For 2 days from November 17 to 18, this program was conducted in Korea National University of Cultural Heritage and Baekje Historic Areas with 36 world heritage managers from 24 domestic institutions.
Direction of Digital Heritage Project
The Information Management Office is currently working on the ISP Information Strategy Planning) to provide the blueprint for ‘an information platform for world heritage interpretation and presentation this year (2022).’ The ‘information platform for world heritage interpretation and presentation’ to be established by the center aims to overcome limitations of the existing world heritage information system through its information sharing services that connect core value data including OUV and various extended value data that have been neglected.

In the year of 2022, UNESCO WHIPIC Research Office conducted outstanding surveys and research projects mainly in four areas: theoretical research, policy research, theme research, and regional research. To be specific, each research was carried out under the name of ‘Research on Theory and Principles of World Heritage Interpretation and Presentation (theoretical research)’, ‘Research on Interpretation and Presentation Policy for Implementing the World Heritage Convention (policy research)’, ‘Interpretation of UNESCO “Sites of Memory associated with Recent Conflicts”: Analysing its conflict structures and its classification (theme research)’, and ‘Research on the World Heritage Attributes of the Republic of Korea (regional research)’
WHIPIC Inaugural Periodical ‘Interpreting World Heritage’ published
WHIPIC published its inaugural periodical ‘Interpreting World Heritage’ for experts and the general audience who are interested in World Heritage. This first issue makes a special contribution to the meaning of inclusive interpretation and presentation of World Heritage sites, why it is needed, and how it can be carried out. It contains a section on interpretation and presentation of World Heritage in the six regional groups defined by UNESCO, and a section on World Heritage sites and communities at the very end. Events with Sejong Citizens to Raise Public Awareness
From December 2 (Fri) to 3 (Sat), the center conducted events with Sejong citizens to raise public awareness. On the 2nd (Fri) at Sejong City Hall and on the 3rd at the square in front of Sejong Geumgang Footbridge, 328 Sejong citizens in total participated in the event.
