| On October 6, 2022 (Thu), the Research Office of WHIPIC held an academic seminar related to ‘Interpretation of UNESCO “Sites of Memory associated with Recent Conflicts”: analyzing its conflict structures and classification’, in the UNESCO Hall, the 11th floor of UNESCO House, Seoul. Among world heritages that have been inscribed or tentatively listed on the World Heritage List according to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention (1972), ‘World Heritage in conflict’ means those involving a dissonance regarding its nomination or conservation methods among stakeholders such as state, group, individual, etc. due to their historical backgrounds or characteristics. With professor Dong jin Kang (Kyungsung University), as a senior researcher, and professor Hyunkyung Lee (Sogang University), as the cooperative researcher, this study will shed light on specific cases such as ‘Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar,’ ‘Valongo Wharf Archaeological Site,’ ‘Hiroshima Peace Memorial,’ ‘Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining,’ and ‘Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.’ This study is one of the major studies that the center has conducted since its foundation early this year.
