Interpretation and Presentation of Heritage

    Heritage Interpretation

Heritage Interpretation is a meaning-making process through communication, participation and experience.

    Heritage Presentation

Heritage Presentation is a range of methods of interpretation delivery for enhancing experience, raising awareness and understanding, and inspiring engagement with heritage.

    Nature of Heritage

Heritage has a variety of values because, in different contexts, stakeholders can grant different values to the same heritage

    OUV of World Heritage

A property must have “Outstanding Universal Value” (OUV) to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. This is a value that can be deemed universal and is selected by the nominating country during the inscription process. However, this may mislead the general public to think that the OUV is the only value of heritage.

    Conflict over Heritage

Stakeholders' different interpretations of World Heritage might trigger conflicts over its values and meanings.

    Inclusive Heritage Interpretation

It is necessary to identify and explain heritage's various meanings and values for the comprehensive understanding and judgment of its value.

Heritage can hold multiple values because a single property can have different values depending on its context, and each group of stakeholders grants it different values. For a property to be on the World Heritage List, it must be recognized for its “Outstanding Universal Value”, which may not include all of its values.
