Addressing Interpretation and Presentation at the 46th World Heritage Committee

    28 Aug 2024

46th session of the World Heritage Committee

WHIPIC attended the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee, held in New Delhi, India, from July 21 to July 31. WHIPIC aimed to strengthen its expertise by analyzing critical issues on the Committee's agenda with experts and understanding international trends in the interpretation and presentation within the Convention.

On July 23, the Director General of WHIPIC directly presented the achievements and plans, along with those of seven other C2 (Category 2) centres, during the newly established agenda item 6B, "Progress Report on the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention by Category 2 Centers Related to World Heritage." This was a result of WHIPIC's efforts to formalize the "Sejong Declaration," adopted at the 8th Annual Meeting of C2 Centers hosted by WHIPIC in 2023, and to gain a voice in reporting on the implementation of C2 centres' activities as a separate agenda item. As the involvement of C2 centres in global development agendas, strategic priorities, The Third Cycle of the Periodic Reporting, and capacity-building strategies continue to grow, this session provided a visible opportunity to highlight the contributions of C2 centres within the Committee.

On the 24th, WHIPIC took a significant step towards future collaborations by meeting with the head of the WII-C2C (World Natural Heritage Management and Training Centre for the Asia-Pacific Region) in India. This meeting was not just about introducing our ongoing projects but also about exploring potential cooperation opportunities. The agreement to establish a cooperative framework is a testament to the exciting future we are building together in the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition to WHIPIC's side events, the centre also attended various side events hosted by the World Heritage Centre, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other C2 institutions. These events provided a platform to share not only the direction and discourse of the Convention but also specific project outcomes related to the conservation and management of World Heritage sites. WHIPIC also strengthened its network with existing partners and explored opportunities for new collaborations.

WHIPIC plans to continue attending the annual World Heritage Committee meetings to contribute to expanding the scope of heritage interpretation and presentation within the framework of the World Heritage system.
