Discussing the application of the Great Zimbabwe Heritage Framework, developed in collaboration with the University of Zimbabwe.
Since last year, WHIPIC has been collaborating with UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa on the rehabilitation and development of the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site(2023–2024).
In 2023, WHIPIC hosted a workshop in Zimbabwe, bringing together various stakeholders, including representatives from the National Museum, universities, and local communities. The focus was on exploring inclusive narratives and methods of interpreting the heritage of the Great Zimbabwe Site. Following the workshop, WHIPIC, with the support of the University of Zimbabwe and relevant authorities, developed a heritage interpretation framework for the site. This effort created the Guidelines for Developing Inclusive Heritage Narratives, subsequently shared with the University of Zimbabwe.
As part of the second year of the project, WHIPIC held a consultation meeting in November in Zimbabwe with key stakeholders, including UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa , the National Museum Agency, the Great Zimbabwe Site Management Office, the University of Zimbabwe, and the Victoria Falls Management Office—the meeting aimed to share the interpretation guidelines and gather feedback from the field. Discussions centred on identifying the limitations of existing interpretation methods and addressing the needs of stakeholders to ensure that the new guidelines could be effectively applied to the Great Zimbabwe Site.
Moving forward, WHIPIC remains committed to refining the direction of heritage interpretation and presentation, striving to engage more stakeholders and illuminate the multifaceted stories of heritage sites.
