On Tuesday, October 15th, WHIPIC held the opening ceremony for the Living Heritage Series publication exhibition, Heritage x Community, at the Jeju World Natural Heritage Centre.
The Living Heritage Series is a project initiated by the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP) in 2017, which publishes research findings on intangible cultural heritage by theme. The 2024 series, in collaboration with WHIPIC, focuses on "Strengthening Community Resilience" and highlights various activities undertaken by communities as key actors in safeguarding both tangible and intangible heritage.

This year’s exhibition was designed in a story-based format, enabling visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the diverse community activities featured in the 2024 Living Heritage Series, which was published on 14th October.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including: LEE Jaesoon (WHIPIC, Deputy Director General), KIM Jisung (ICHCAP, Director General), KANG Seokchan (JEJU World Natural Heritage Centre, World Heritage Office Head Director), KO Jongseok (IUCN, Senior Programme Coordinator, World Heritage Team), KIM Gijo (GCIDA, Planning & Administration Team Manager), and JEON Yongmun (GCIDA, Research & Development Team Programme Manager), among other heritage-related experts who gathered to celebrate the publication and the exhibition’s launch.

Both Director General LEE Jaesoon and Director General KIM Jisung expressed their hopes that this exhibition would serve as a meaningful opportunity to once again highlight the essential role of communities in preserving World Heritage and intangible cultural heritage. They also emphasised their commitment to increasing community involvement in heritage preservation through various follow-up programmes and research initiatives.

Following the opening ceremony, visitors were given the opportunity to explore global examples of heritage management and protection through a docent-led tour, deepening their understanding of the integrated value of both tangible and intangible heritage. The tour also provided a moment for visitors to reflect on how their own communities might contribute to similar efforts.
The exhibition will be open at the Jeju World Natural Heritage Centre until Wednesday, 20th November. We encourage everyone to visit and show their support!
