    Lecture WHIPIC’s International Fellow Dr. Pascal Taruvinga

    On September 23, 2024, Dr. Pascal Tarunvinga, WHIPIC’s international fellow, delivered a lecture at the Korea National University of Heritage KNUH), Myeong-dong campus. 30 graduate students from the International Joint Program attended. The topic was “The Localness of Heritage Before It Becomes Universal: The Emerging Experiences of World Heritage Sites In Africa.”

    Dr. Pascal emphasized the importance of local knowledge systems and traditional heritage management methods in heritage preservation and shared various case studies. One of the key examples was the participation of local communities in the conservation and restoration efforts in Mali, showcasing how communities can play a creative and resilient role in heritage management. He also highlighted that removing the local aspects of heritage weakens its universality, underscoring the critical role of communities in heritage management.

    In addition to giving lecture at the university, Dr. Pascall had a chance to visit various Korea’s cultural heritage sites. With WHIPIC’s two international interns, Dr. Pascal visited the National Museum of Korea and Jongmyo Shrine. These visits provided a valuable opportunity for them to directly experience Korean history and heritage.

    Moreover, this experience allowed the participants to explore Korean cultural assets while gaining insights into the interpretation and presentation of heritage in different global contexts.
