2023 Research Plan of the

UNESCO WHIPIC Research and Development Office

- Four different areas related to Heritage Interpretation and Presentation; theoretical, policy, thematic and regional research will be going on this year -

Following the first year’s outcomes of the UNESCO WHIPIC Research and Development office, we plan to convey four different research projects in 2023 as we did last year: theoretical, policy, thematic, and regional research.

First, the theoretical research on heritage interpretation and presentation is an ongoing study that started in 2022 when a draft definition of ‘heritage interpretation’ was invented. This year, the discussion will be about ‘heritage presentation’. International heritage specialists on heritage interpretation and presentation from different regions will contribute to this study by suggesting opinions and ideas on the definition and concepts of heritage presentation based on their bountiful experiences.

Second, the interpretation and presentation policy research comprehensively analyses policy documents of UNESCO, such as the World Heritage Convention, the Operating Guidelines, and other related manuals from the perspectives of heritage interpretation and presentation. The research aims to understand the trend of interpretation and presentation of World Heritage sites and suggest ways to expand the role of interpretation and explanation for delivering the Outstanding Universal Value as well as other values of the World heritage sites.

Third, the regional research plans to conduct a study to establish the ’Interpretation Strategy’ for the UNESCO World Heritage nomination of Sites of Memory associated with recent conflicts. As part of the Guiding Principles for the preparation of nominations concerning sites of memory associated with recent conflicts, which was adopted by the World Heritage Committee last January, the ‘Interpretation Strategy’ will be applied to the nomination of sites of memory under the criterion (vi).

Fourth, a follow-up study will be carried out in thematic research to deepen the outcome of the 2022 thematic research, ‘Interpretation of UNESCO “Sites of Memory associated with Recent Conflicts” : Analysing its conflict structures and its classification’. We expect this study will contribute to expanding the social role of sites of memory and the peace-building goal of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.

Last but not least, the ‘2023 World Heritage Interpretation Presentation Forum’ will be held in November to share the research and project outcomes of the UNESCO WHIPIC and explore international heritage interpretation and presentation discourses with global heritage experts and professionals.
